Lymphatic Massage After Liposuction

Melissa McDonald Naturopath

Liposuction is a popular surgical procedure that helps to achieve a more sculpted and less flabby body by removing excess fat deposits. While liposuction can provide fantastic results, the recovery process can be uncomfortable. This can be due to swelling and bruising.

To speed up healing, many patients opt for lymphatic drainage massage. In this blog, we will explore what lymphatic drainage massage is, and why it is recommended after liposuction.

What Is Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

Lymphatic drainage massage, also known as manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), is a specialised massage technique that targets the lymphatic system, a crucial part of the body’s immune system.

The lymphatic system plays a role in draining excess fluids, toxins, and waste products from tissues while transporting white blood cells and nutrients to various parts of the body. This massage technique involves gentle, rhythmic movements and is performed by a trained therapist.

The lymphatic drainage massage focuses on stimulating the flow of lymph throughout the body. This is achieved by applying light pressure and gentle strokes in a specific pattern that follows the natural pathways of the lymphatic system.

The goal is to remove built-up fluids and toxins, reduce swelling, and support the body’s natural healing process.

What are the benefits of lymphatic drainage massage after liposuction?

  • Reduces Swelling and Oedema

Liposuction surgery disrupts the lymphatic system’s natural flow, leading to a buildup of fluids in the treated areas, causing significant postoperative swelling and oedema. Lymphatic drainage massage helps reestablish proper lymphatic circulation, which can significantly reduce swelling and discomfort.

  • Accelerates Healing

By promoting the removal of waste products and excess fluids from the surgical site, lymphatic drainage massage can expedite the healing process, allowing you to recover more quickly and comfortably.

  • Minimises Pain and Discomfort:

Liposuction can cause soreness and discomfort during the recovery phase. The gentle and soothing nature of lymphatic drainage massage helps alleviate pain and eases muscle tension.

  • Enhances the Cosmetic Outcome

A reduced risk of complications and improved healing can lead to better cosmetic results. Lymphatic drainage massage can help maintain the desired body contours and ensure a more satisfactory outcome from liposuction.

How Soon After Surgery Should I Have Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

It’s generally recommended to wait at least a 3 days before getting a lymphatic massage, and then 3 sessions per week for the first 2 weeks. This allows healing to speed up and reduces the risk of any complications.

Should I have Lymphatic Drainage Therapy before my procedure?

It is generally recommended to have lymphatic massage sessions 3 weeks before surgery, 1 per week.
