How Acupuncture Influences the Vagus Nerve

What is the Vagus Nerve?
The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in the body that plays a crucial role in regulating many bodily functions, including heart rate, digestion, and inflammation. It’s part of the parasympathetic nervous system, also known as the “rest and digest” system, which helps modulate the stress response and increases relaxation.
Our resident acupuncturist Dr Dennis Jang, uses specific acupuncture points and a vagus nerve stimulation device to improve the tone of the vagus nerve which can be used to support various conditions and complaints.
Why use Acupuncture for your Vagus Nerve?
By targeting specific acupuncture points, acupuncture may help regulate vagal tone which can promote relaxation and reduce anxiety.
Research shows that stimulating the vagus nerve with acupuncture may modulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (the body’s stress response system) which can improve mood and reduce depression scores.
Studies show that acupuncture treatment significantly improves the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) function. This may prevent the reflux of gastric contents back into the esophagus.
What is a Vagus Nerve Stimulation Device?
The Sensate device is a non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation tool designed to reduce stress and anxiety. It works by emitting infrasonic waves and soundscapes through bone conduction, which helps to tone the vagus nerve and calm the nervous system.
Dennis uses the sensate device in his clinical practice. You place the device on your chest, and it uses a combination of vibrations and curated sounds to promote relaxation in as little as 10 minutes. Over time, regular use of the Sensate device can improve stress resilience, sleep quality, heart rate variability, and overall well-being
